Winter stormwater management for worry free waterways

In Michigan, the winter weather can be challenging, especially with the freezing cold temperatures. Road salt is the most commonly used deicing substance, but it also has negative consequences. When applying anti-icing or deicing materials, operators much be aware of local area that may be sensitive to salt and implement appropriate buffer zones or choose other deicing options.

To ensure the integrity and functionality of stormwater systems during freezing temperatures, a winter preparedness checklist is essential for requirements during winter some options to consider may include:

  • Inspecting storm drains and pipes: Regularly inspecting pipes and drains for blockages or standing water.

  • Removing Debris: Remove any dead trees or limbs from the basins to prevent blockages

  • Cover Salt Pipes: Most salt is stored at local road commissions in barns, but to prevent runoff and leaching into stormwater systems it’s best to keep the salt piles covered

  • Educate Personnel: Train operators that are responsible for salt storage and handling to minimize salt runoff and contamination

As freezing temperatures and winter storms start to take over our Great Lakes State, it is crucial to prioritize cold weather stormwater management. Collaborating with stakeholders, regulatory agencies, regular maintenance and comprehensive winter stormwater planning is vital to ensure the integrity and functionality of our stormwater systems even during freezing temperatures.
